What to Expect During a Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel is one of the most rewarding home improvement projects you can do — and one of the most disruptive. Knowing what to expect before you start makes the whole process much smoother. Here's an honest look at how a kitchen remodel typically unfolds.

The Planning Phase

Before any work begins, good planning is everything. This is the phase where you make the big decisions:

Don't rush this phase. Changes made during construction are exponentially more expensive than changes made on paper.

What the Construction Process Looks Like

  1. Demo — Old cabinets, countertops, flooring, and sometimes walls come out. Fast but messy.
  2. Rough work — Plumbing, electrical, and any structural changes happen here. Inspections may be required.
  3. Cabinet installation — Usually one of the longest lead items if custom or semi-custom.
  4. Countertop templating and installation — Countertops are measured after cabinets are installed, then fabricated (allow 1–2 weeks).
  5. Appliance installation — Goes in after countertops.
  6. Tile, backsplash, and finish work — The detail work that makes it all come together.
  7. Final touches — Hardware, lighting trim, touch-up paint, cleaning.
